Vilnius University was established in 1579 in the city of Vilnius by King Stephen Bathory, who transformed the Jesuit college into a higher education institution. It is the oldest and largest university in Lithuania and one of the oldest in Central and Eastern Europe. It is a university with a large and arduous history. Despite the obstacles throughout its existence, the university persevered and never stopped educating future professionals.
Vilnius University has been there through Lithuania’s ups and downs, keeping its traditions and history. During World War II, the university was closed down by the Germans in 1943, but it was impossible for Lithuania to give up on one of the best universities in Europe. In no time, VU resumed its activities in the autumn of 1944.
World War II wasn’t the only obstacle for this medical school. During the Soviet system, the university was restrained, but instead of losing, Vilnius grew and gained force. And what is even more impressive is that this school freed itself from the Soviet ideology 2 years before Lithuania’s independence in 1990.
The university is a highly preferred destination for international students willing to study medicine in English abroad. The Faculty of Medicine offers medicine and dentistry programmes, both entirely taught in English.

According to legend, Grand Duke Gediminas had a dream after hunting in the region. He saw an iron wolf that stood atop a hill and howled as loudly as a hundred wolves. Gediminas asked his pagan priest to interpret the dream.
According to the priest, the iron wolf represented a castle and a city that the Grand Duke would establish on the nearby hill. The city would be the capital of the Lithuanian lands, bringing glory throughout the world.
The Grand Duke did as the gods willed, and it seems his priest was quite accurate in his interpretation. In the 15th century, Vilnius was the capital of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth - the biggest country in Europe. In addition, the city’s spectacular architecture has attracted international awe through the centuries.
The Old Town of Vilnius contains Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings such as the Church of St. Anne, the Palace of the Grand Duke, and Vilnius University’s main campus. Another spectacular landmark is the Gate of Dawn - the only remainder of the city’s walls. The building’s chapel contains a miraculous icon, and it is a significant site of the Catholic Pilgrimage.
However, not all is history in Vilnius. The city has many important contemporary events and annual festivals. For example, Trakai Medieval Festival is a majestic event with costumes, music, theatre, and celebrations of all things Medieval, including food, knights, and markets. Dark magic and witchcraft are frowned upon.
Students also enjoy the local music scene as a source of entertainment and socialising. Apart from the clubs and bars in Vilnius, the local Song and Dance Celebration is a favourite tradition that spans several days and involves the majority of the city. The singing and dancing might not seem entirely comprehensible to international students initially. Still, it is easily the most awaited time of the year.
The academic year at Vilnius University starts on the 1st of September, and the first term ends before the Christmas holidays. After the winter holidays, the exam session is held for around 4 weeks.
The Spring semester starts on the 4th of February and finishes at the end of May. The exam days are during the whole of June.
