Victor Babes University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timișoara, Romania

The Victor Babes University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timișoara, or UMF Timisoara as it’s also known as was founded in 1944 when King Michael I of Romania signed the decree-law No. 660. It was first established as a small faculty and as part of Western University.

It originally had only 416 students enrolled in the university in its first year but now boasts an impressive 4270 students with 700 academic staff. The university was named after the prominent Romanian scientist Victor Babes. He was one of the founders of modern microbiology and also wrote one of the first treatises for bacteriology in the world.

It is one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in Romania, with its location in Timiș County, the capital city being Timișoara. As of the 2011 census, it is the third most populated city with 319,279 inhabitants and is on its way to becoming a candidate for the 2021 European Capital of Culture. It is one of the first European cities in the world to use electricity to illuminate public streets, second only to that New York City in America.

Its character is greatly influenced by the many cultures found within, where Turkey, Austria, Germany, and Serbia all left their mark in one way or another. Whether you’re looking to enjoy the nightlife or the theatrical performances and art galleries and museums, you’ll always find something to do in this progressive and cosmopolitan city. Courses Offered at Victor Babes University Of Medicine

The university has three faculties which in turn have their sub specialisations; the Faculty of Medicine (Medicine, Registered Nurses, Physiotherapy, Radiology and Imaging, Diet and Nutrition), the Faculty of Dental Medicine (Dental Medicine, Dental Technique, Registered Nurses in Dentistry), and finally the Faculty of Pharmacy (Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Assistants).

There are no accelerated medical pathways here, but you can transfer from another university.

The Society of Timișoara Medical Students organises various cultural and scientific events. The group aims to facilitate students’ academic and social interests, and it provides excellent networking opportunities.

In addition, Victor Babes University organises various conferences, round tables, and charity events. Apart from serious events, the university hosts annual celebrations and sports events for students.

Medical University of Timisoara Tuition Fees

Here you can study medicine (6 years), dental medicine (6 years), and pharmacy (5 years) in English and French.

The tuition fees and places are as follows:

  • Medicine in English/French is per year and has 100 seats for EU members 60 seats and 40 for non-EU
  • Dental medicine in English/French is per year and offers 40 seats for EU members and 35 seats for non-EU
  • Pharmacy in English/French is per year and has 10 seats for EU members and 50 seats for non-EU

For medicine, the first three years are pre-clinical with a heavy emphasis on the fundamental subjects; Anatomy, Histology, Biology, Biochemistry, and Biophysics. The last three years are clinical with a focus on surgery and preventative medicine.

Dental Medicine is a practical speciality allowing graduates to practise their profession without having to complete other specialisations, as in the case of General Medicine.

The application process is from the beginning of June until the end of July.

To get accepted to this university, you have to successfully pass 2 exams which will be held at the beginning of September:

Term Dates

A typical academic year here usually starts on the 15th of September and ends around mid-February, after the mid-term exams. There are 2 weeks of Christmas holiday and one 1-week mid-term holiday.
