The Victor Babes University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timișoara, or UMF Timisoara as it’s also known as was founded in 1944 when King Michael I of Romania signed the decree-law No. 660. It was first established as a small faculty and as part of Western University.
It originally had only 416 students enrolled in the university in its first year but now boasts an impressive 4270 students with 700 academic staff. The university was named after the prominent Romanian scientist Victor Babes. He was one of the founders of modern microbiology and also wrote one of the first treatises for bacteriology in the world.
It is one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in Romania, with its location in Timiș County, the capital city being Timișoara. As of the 2011 census, it is the third most populated city with 319,279 inhabitants and is on its way to becoming a candidate for the 2021 European Capital of Culture. It is one of the first European cities in the world to use electricity to illuminate public streets, second only to that New York City in America.

The university has three faculties which in turn have their sub specialisations; the Faculty of Medicine (Medicine, Registered Nurses, Physiotherapy, Radiology and Imaging, Diet and Nutrition), the Faculty of Dental Medicine (Dental Medicine, Dental Technique, Registered Nurses in Dentistry), and finally the Faculty of Pharmacy (Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Assistants).

For medicine, the first three years are pre-clinical with a heavy emphasis on the fundamental subjects; Anatomy, Histology, Biology, Biochemistry, and Biophysics. The last three years are clinical with a focus on surgery and preventative medicine.
Dental Medicine is a practical speciality allowing graduates to practise their profession without having to complete other specialisations, as in the case of General Medicine.
