St. George's University School of Medicine offers one of the most extensive ranges of MD programmes in English. They are designed to meet the needs of a diverse group of students with different educational backgrounds. The 4 available pathways into medicine provide flexible options for students to start their medical education, depending on their prior academic experience.

4-Year MD Programme

The traditional 4-year graduate entry MD programme is designed for students who have completed a Bachelor's degree and have met the prerequisite coursework in sciences. This programme focuses on providing a comprehensive medical education, starting with 2 years of basic sciences taught on the Grenada campus, followed by 2 years of clinical training at affiliated hospitals in the US and UK​.

Here's an overview of the programme structure:

Basic Sciences (Years 1 and 2)

• Location: True Blue campus in Grenada
• Duration: 5 terms (2 years)
• Curriculum:
  • Term 1 focuses on foundational subjects such as Anatomy, Histology, and Biochemistry.
  • Term 2 builds on foundational knowledge with courses in Physiology, Neuroscience, and Medical Genetics.
  • Term 3 continues with Pathology, Microbiology, and Pharmacology.
  • Term 4 concludes with courses in Pathophysiology, Behavioral Sciences, and Introduction to Clinical Medicine.
  • Term 5 is dedicated to the principles of clinical medicine.

During this time students will get to learn about the basic sciences through lectures, laboratory sessions, small group discussions, and clinical skills training​.

Clinical Training (Years 3 and 4)

• Location: affiliated hospitals and clinical centres in the United States and the United Kingdom
• Duration: 5 terms (2 years)
• Curriculum:
  • Core rotations include Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Psychiatry, and Family Medicine.
  • Elective rotations offer a variety of specialised medical fields to choose from, allowing students to specialise their clinical experience.

During the latter 2 years, students will gain hands-on experience in patient care, diagnosis, and treatment under the supervision of experienced medical professionals.

• USMLE preparation for both Step 1 and Step 2 CK.

5-Year MD Programme

The 5-year MD programme is ideal for students who have completed high school but have not yet fulfilled the necessary undergraduate coursework in science-related fields. This pathway includes an additional year of preclinical studies, providing a solid foundation in the sciences before progressing to the standard medical curriculum​.

6-Year MD Programme

Designed for students with an advanced secondary school diploma or equivalent, the 6-year MD programme adds 2 years of preclinical coursework. This pathway allows students to build a strong scientific and medical foundation before entering the traditional 4 years of medical education​.

7-Year MD Programme

The 7-year MD programme is structured for students who have completed their secondary education but require additional coursework in both the sciences and general education. This extended pathway ensures students are thoroughly prepared for the intensity of medical school, beginning with 3 years of preclinical studies and followed by the standard 4-year medical curriculum​.

Transfer Opportunities

St. George's University also welcomes transfer students from other medical schools. Transfer applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis, considering their previous academic performance and the compatibility of their completed coursework with SGU’s curriculum.

Tuition Fees at St. George's University

St. George’s University uses semester based tuition fees. The 4-year MD serves as the basis for the cost of medical education and the 5, 6, and 7-year options each add to the cost, depending on the programme. 

The tuition fees at St. George’s University vary depending on the stage of the medical programme and are as follows:

4-year MD Course

Basic Sciences Tuition Fees:

• Term 1: + admin fee
• Term 2: + admin fee

• Terms 3/4 (combined)*: + admin fee

*Please note that Terms 3 and 4 are usually billed together and are considered combined.

5, 6 and 7-year MD Programme

Each programme adds 2 pre-clinical terms depending on the length of the course. These are also billed per term, and each term costs .

Admission Requirements for the Medicine Programme at St. George's University

St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, has specific admission requirements depending on the MD programme, but all of them include attending an interview (typically online via Zoom), and no entrance exam is required.

The admission requirements are as follows:

4-Year MD Programme Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college is required.
• Prerequisite coursework:
  1. One year of General Biology or Zoology with lab
  2. One year of Inorganic Chemistry (General or Physical) with lab
  3. One year of Organic Chemistry with lab
  4. One semester of Physics with lab
  5. One semester of Math (Calculus, Computer Science, or Statistics)
  6. One semester of English​
• Medical School Admission Test (MCAT):
  1. US аpplicants must submit an MCAT score.
  2. Canadian аpplicants are not required unless an MCAT has been taken or is planned.
  3. International аpplicants are not required to submit an MCAT score unless from North America​.

5-Year Medicine Course Requirements

• Advanced levels: a minimum of 3 subjects with A’s and B’s in Biology, Chemistry, and either Math or Physics; Math or Physics can be accepted at AS level with a strong non-science third A level.
• International Baccalaureate (IB): minimum score of 32 points with 3 HL science subjects recommended; 2 HL subjects required in Chemistry and Biology with scores of 5 or higher.
• Other qualifications: specific international equivalents, such as India 10+2 with a minimum of 80% in core science subjects​.

6-Year Medical Programme Requirements

• Secondary school diploma with exceptional science performance, including Advanced Placement (AP) courses or equivalents like the International Baccalaureate.
• Other qualifications, such as AS Levels, Baccalaureate, South Africa Matric, Higher School Exam, Irish Leaving Certificate, or WASSCE with B2 or better in core subjects​.

7-Year MD Course Requirements

• An International General Certificate of Secondary Education with a strong performance in science with a minimum of B in 6 subjects, including Biology, Chemistry, Math, Physics, and English. Requirements may vary by region​.

Additional Requirements

• English proficiency is required for applicants from non-English-speaking countries. Accepted tests include IELTS (7.0 on each band), TOEFL (94-101 overall), and other equivalents​.
• Applicants must meet technical standards related to observation, communication, motor skills, intellectual abilities, and emotional health to ensure they can complete the medical programme and practice medicine effectively​.
