Life as a Medical Student in Northern Nicosia, Cyprus

Northern Nicosia is the Turkish part of the city and the capital of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. According to scholars, this part of the city is richer in historic buildings and cultural monuments than its Southern Greek counterpart of the Walled City.

Aspiring doctors have plenty of landmarks to see, such as Ataturk Square with its Venetian Column or the signature Girne Avenue leading all the way to the Kyrenia Gate of the Venetian Wall.

Students can truly feel the civilisational imprints left by past empires and kingdoms in this part of Nicosia. Selimiye Mosque is a perfect example of historical transformation. It began as a Byzantine church. Afterwards, it was changed into the Gothic Cathedral of St Sophia during the Crusades, and later, the Ottomans consecrated it as a mosque.

While students can easily stumble on historical artefacts in the streets, several museums take time to travel to the next level. The Dervish Pasha Mansion is a local ethnographic museum displaying collections from the Ottoman period in the city. The Mevlevi Tekke Museum focuses on the rites and customs of the Whirling Dervishes – a Sufi monastic order following the teachings of the famous Persian poet, mystic, and Islamic theologian Rumi.

However, medical students do enjoy one more type of culture in Nicosia - the popular kind. In fact, Near East University organises several significant cultural festivals, including the Rock ‘n Cyprus. The university has constructed the Park Near East, where it hosts concerts, dance festivals, sports, and board game events. With 25,000 students, they have surely found a constructive way to entertain young people, and medical students will surely enjoy most of them.

Term Dates

The first semester begins in September and ends in December. The second semester begins on 1 February till late May. The academic year is 32 weeks (7 months) long. Exams are usually held in January and June.
