Aspiring doctors have plenty of landmarks to see, such as Ataturk Square with its Venetian Column or the signature Girne Avenue leading all the way to the Kyrenia Gate of the Venetian Wall.
Students can truly feel the civilisational imprints left by past empires and kingdoms in this part of Nicosia. Selimiye Mosque is a perfect example of historical transformation. It began as a Byzantine church. Afterwards, it was changed into the Gothic Cathedral of St Sophia during the Crusades, and later, the Ottomans consecrated it as a mosque.
While students can easily stumble on historical artefacts in the streets, several museums take time to travel to the next level. The Dervish Pasha Mansion is a local ethnographic museum displaying collections from the Ottoman period in the city. The Mevlevi Tekke Museum focuses on the rites and customs of the Whirling Dervishes – a Sufi monastic order following the teachings of the famous Persian poet, mystic, and Islamic theologian Rumi.
